Walmart and Microsoft lead third day of the Consumer Electronics Show 2021

The president of Microsoft, Brad Smith, yesterday condemned the massive cyberattack called SolarWinds, and for which Russia was held responsible, calling it “a massive and indiscriminate global attack on the technology supply chain that we are all responsible for protecting.”

“What have some people used the pandemic for? To launch cyberattacks against hospitals, against the public health sector, against the World Health Organization, against the first line of critical response, ”said Smith. “We have to come together as an industry and use the collective voice to declare that this is not acceptable.”

Smith was one of the keynote speakers on the third day of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which in this edition is held in virtual format due to the pandemic.

Another of the top executives on yesterday’s agenda was the CEO of Walmart, Doug McMillon, who discussed how the company has addressed the countless health, logistics, supply chain and economic challenges that the pandemic has brought with it. “There have been more changes in this period than in my 30 years at Walmart,” acknowledged the executive, referring not only to the pandemic but also to the technological changes that have had to accelerate.

McMillon stated that, concurrently, the company has aggressive goals to improve racial equity throughout its supply chain and internal policies. He mentioned that one of the concrete moves should be to choose as partners or suppliers more companies that are owned by black entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, internally, a committee was appointed to identify which policies require adjustments.

“This year has to produce more results,” he said. “Inclusive environments are more successful.”

Regarding the membership program in the digital store, Walmart +, announced that the goal is to scale its scope and the amount of benefits it offers, but at a manageable rate in order to create capacity and meet customer expectations. And, in an indirect allusion to the Prime program of the competitor Amazon, he assured that “it will be unique. We are not going to copy anyone else ”.

CES continues today in its 100% digital format.
