Coronavirus did not spare even the forces of police. 5562 agents spent a period of quarantine at home because of Covid-19.
The numbers of the state police
Of these, only 430 tested positive for the swab and, fortunately, there were just 2 deaths. To avoid the spread of the infection, 2745 policemen who had only a few symptoms were quarantined as a preventive measure even before being subjected to the swab. 1265 of these are, however, negative results coronavirus. Another 2387 are the agents who, although not presenting symptoms, ended up in quarantine after coming into contact with people at risk, but 2015 are already free to return to service (see here all the data exclusively).
The spread of the virus for police officers followed the same trend as the rest of society with Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Piedmont which suffer more than all the other regions. Again the record belongs to Lombardy where we find 114 Covid-19 positive agents and 615 others who spent 15 days in quarantine because they showed symptoms attributable to coronavirus. As many as 467 of these, however, have already ended their quarantine period. Another 443 policemen have had relationships with people at risk and are (or were) in quarantine, although they did not present any type of symptoms.
The only two deaths, however, occurred in the Center-South: one in Lazio and one in Campania. The hospitalized are only 22 and are divided as follows: Lombardy (8), Emilia Romagna and Lazio (3), Puglia (2), Piedmont, Liguria, Tuscany, Marche, Abruzzo and Sicily (1). The least affected region was Calabria which had only one positive Coronavirus agent, but has already finished its isolation.
Within a week there has been an increase in positive cases of 2% (going from 423 to 430), but 11 agents have left isolation and two have been discharged from the hospitals where they were hospitalized. Agents that tested negative for buffer or who have ended their period of isolation have grown by 19% (from 106 to 126). In addition, the number of those in quarantine with symptoms similar to Covid-19 decreased by 4% (decreasing from 429 to 412), while the agents of this same category who ended their quarantine grew by 4% (increasing from 1024 to 1068) and who can therefore return to service.
The story of Mario, a policeman who survived Covid-19
Mario, the invented name of an agent who lived the coronavirus experience on his own skin, tells ilgiornale.it with some effort his mood. “Leaving the hospital made me feel like I was coming back to life,” he says while he is still recovering. All his vicissitudes began with an unusual “feeling of lack of air” which particularly marked the course of his illness. He still has little desire to go into detail about this terrible story that forced him to be isolated from his family. “The worst thing is having to be locked up, away from everything and everyone without being able to see anyone for so many days,” he says by phone before greeting us and returning to his loved ones.
Risks and containment measures against Covid-19
“We agents, of course, do not run the same risks of contagion as doctors or healthcare workers, but we come immediately after them because our work forces us to be in close contact with people we do not know,” he explains Domenico Pianese, Coisp secretary general who adds: “Only yesterday we stopped 197 thousand people and among them there can be positive and asymptomatic”. “Fortunately with the quarantine there has been a reduction in crime of 70-75%, but in the short term we expect an increase in the phenomenon of usury and extortion and a resurgence of criminal phenomena in conjunction with the beginning of phase 2” .
Here, therefore, that having adopted effective containment measures has allowed the state police not to be too troubled. When the state of national emergency was declared, in fact, smart working was encouraged and teams of agents were created that alternate and never meet in the office. “It has also been placed in quarantine all staff who had had contact with people who could be Covid’s carriers. If an agent had symptoms similar to those predicted by WHO, he was immediately placed in quarantine to avoid mass contagions within the state police. We are therefore managing to react well, “concluded Pianese.
